Kim Mulkey’s LSU Tigers have met their arch rivals, the South Carolina Gamecocks, twice in the last two months. The two teams first met on Feb. 14. The Gamecocks were the better team that day, with Tessa Johnson leading the way, scoring 21 points to secure the win.
Raven Johnson added 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Madina Okot dominated with 17 rebounds as the Gamecocks showed overall control in the game. The Tigers got an opportunity to exact revenge in the SEC Tournament. However, they were beaten 83-77.
Ahead of the Sweet 16 matchup against the Duke Blue Devils, LSU head coach Kim Mulkey talked about the SEC Tournament loss against South Carolina and the impact it had on her team.
“I think the loss in the SEC Tournament shook them a little bit. I think it was a lot of petty stuff going on in the huddle, and they were not really happy about how it was perceived, and I think they’ve fixed it,” Mulkey said.
As per the LSU head coach, the Tigers have learned their lesson from that loss and are in a better position now than they were earlier this month. She said that if the Tigers hadn’t worked on their mistakes and improved, they wouldn’t have made it to the Sweet 16.
Kim Mulkey on Facing Duke in Sweet 16
Mulkey’s team faced the Duke Blue Devils in December. After a rough start, the Tigers bounced back and recorded a 90-60 win. The Sweet 16 matchup will be a rematch between the two teams.
Mulkey said that Duke is better today than it was a few months ago.
“Certainly you look at that, but you understand, they’re better today than they were in that game,” she said. “And I think we’re better today than that game. But you certainly look at every bit of film you can find.”
LSU and Duke will play at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento tomorrow.
