Geno Auriemma has been the head coach for the UConn Huskies since 1985. With 12 NCAA titles, 25 Final Four appearances, 24 Big East titles, eight Naismith Coach of the Year awards, and more, he is one of the most decorated coaches in basketball history.
Even at the age of 72, Auriemma has shown no signs of slowing down. But after tonight’s Final Four loss against the South Carolina Gamecocks, he hinted at retiring.
Auriemma led the UConn Huskies to an unbeaten run this season. They won 38 straight games to reach the Final Four. Tonight, they were outplayed, and Coach Geno was outcoached by Dawn Staley.
At the end of the game, he got into a heated exchange with Staley on the sidelines. The chaotic moment has taken over all discussions about tonight’s matchup. Will this be the end of Auriemma’s legendary career?
At the post-game presser, he was asked about what keeps him motivated to keep going after decades of success and an unparalleled resume in basketball coaching. Auriemma jokingly said that he’s not sure if he has the same motivation after tonight’s loss.
“Well, after tonight, I don’t know that I want to continue coaching,” he said.
It was clear that Auriemma was joking. He has no plans of retiring anytime soon, and despite the loss against South Carolina, he has shown that he has so much more to offer to aspiring professional athletes.
The Final Four loss and the aftermath will be a tough one to move on from. But there’s no reason for Auriemma to bid farewell to the game and retire as a coach.
Geno Auriemma on Poor Officiating
Auriemma’s outburst at the end of the game could have been a result of the frustration building up throughout the game. At the post-game press conference, he talked about some of the things that tipped the scales in South Carolina’s favor.
“There were six fouls called that quarter, all of them against us. And they’ve been beating the s**t out of our guys down there the entire game,” he said. “I’m not making excuses, because we haven’t been able to make a shot. But this is ridiculous.”
“Their coach rants and raves on the sideline and calls the referees some names that you don’t want to hear. And now we got 6-0, and I’ve got a kid with a ripped jersey, and they go, I didn’t see it.”
He said that the game officials should have done a better job tonight because it wasn’t a regular game. This was a ticket to the National Championship matchup on Sunday.
