The Final Four showdown between Geno Auriemma’s UConn Huskies and Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks will be discussed for a long time. And not just because of how well the Gamecocks played.
After trailing by two points at the end of the first half, South Carolina came back in the second half to put up a masterclass performance on offense and defense. They outscored the Huskies 38-22 to win 62-48.
What happened after the game was embarrassing. With the last few seconds left, Staley walked up to Auriemma to shake hands, as coaches do at the end of the game. Instead, Auriemma was furious and started a heated exchange with the Gamecocks head coach.
Staley didn’t back down, and within seconds, it became a forgettable moment between two of the best coaches in the world. Staff members, refs, and even some players had to step in to separate them.
At the post-game press conference, Auriemma was asked about his exchange with Staley, but he didn’t provide a straight answer.
“I said what I had to say…Nothing,” Auriemma said when asked about what happened between him and Staley.
Looking at the footage from the game, it didn’t seem like it was “nothing.” They didn’t just exchange a few words; it went on for over a minute. The two coaches were so furiously arguing with each other that it caught everyone’s attention immediately.
We wouldn’t know what exactly happened until both of them provide their side of the story. For now, the Gamecocks have qualified for the National Championship game while UConn’s unbeaten season run has come to an end.
Stephen A. Smith Called Out Geno Auriemma
After Coach Geno and Staley’s heated exchange, Stephen A. Smith took to X to call out the Huskies coach. It was shocking for Smith as well because it wasn’t something that one would expect from Auriemma.
“That was some straight B.S. from the GREAT Geno Auriemma. Never — ever — thought I’d see the day when the greatest woman’s college coach in history would go down so CLASSLESSLY!!! Horrible look, and should be called out for it,” he wrote.
Stephen A. said that Auriemma acted out of character after getting outcoached by Staley.
“He got OUTCOACHED. Plain and simple. And gets in her face like she did something wrong to him instead of being gracious. Had Dawn Staley acted like that we would be all over her,” he added.
Auriemma’s actions have left fans scratching their heads, too. Since no one knows the exact reason behind this outburst, it’s all theories for now.
