UCLA has a new football head coach in Bob Chesney, who immediately made an impression with his speech about how many in the program, including the janitors and staff, are important. This impressed many, including women’s basketball head coach Cori Close, who was fresh off a massive 44-point blowout win against the Indiana Hoosiers on Sunday.
The Bruins head coach, who currently leads the No. 2-ranked team in the country, praised Chesney during the post-game presser after that win over Indiana:
“I think he has a real servant’s heart. I was thrilled about the speech he gave his team and it was all about valuing every person that touches that program. That the custodial staff was just as much a part of their team as the quarterback was, or the head coach was, and I just thought that his character and his leadership shined so brightly that day.”
Chesney’s speech about his football team went viral, getting over 620,000 views on X as of writing. Chesney has a tall task ahead of him, as he will have to lead a football program in shambles. While UCLA has very good men’s and women’s basketball program, its football program has been lagging, especially in the ultra-competitive Big Ten.
As for Cori Close and the UCLA Bruins women’s basketball team, they now climb to 25-1 and 15-0 in the Big Ten. They demolished Indiana by 44 points, with the final score being 92-48, though this is only their second-largest margin of victory for this season.

The Indiana vs. UCLA game at the Pauley Pavilion on Sunday was a bit of a star-studded affair, as Bob Chesney himself was there as the women’s basketball squad took on the Indiana Hoosiers, whose school was fresh off a national title in Chesney’s sport.
NBA star Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Olympian Jackie Joyner-Kersee were also there to watch as the Bruins dominated Indiana throughout the game. Star center Lauren Betts led the squad with a double-double, 16 points and 14 rebounds, while her sister, Sienna Betts, added 10 points.
