Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd have proven to be one of the greatest backcourt duos in college basketball history, leading UConn to a national championship last year before Bueckers was drafted No. 1 during the WNBA draft a few months later.
Now, the Dallas Wings have the No. 1 pick again, and while many believe they could go for Spanish center Awa Fam or UCLA’s Lauren Betts, there are others who believe it would be Fudd.
Among those who think the Wings will be reuniting one of women’s basketball’s biggest power couples is Carmelo Anthony. The New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets legend said during his ‘7pm in Brooklyn’ podcast that the Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd duo is already proven.
“I would do that because it has been proven… it’s been proven over four years,” he said. “They know how to play together, they know how to win. They know each other, so if you could get continuity in the backcourt like that, if it was me, I know my ups and downs, I know me as a person outside of basketball, and now the franchise player is bringing in another potential franchise player.”
Bueckers exploded onto the scene during her rookie season with the Dallas Wings, even winning Rookie of the Year and becoming an All-Star as a rookie. However, she would often be spotted in UConn games cheering for her girlfriend or be seen having some romantic moments with her in public, drawing a lot of interest and making them one of the highest-profile celebrity lesbian couples today.
New Dallas Wings Coach Could Lean Towards Azzi Fudd Because of Geno Auriemma Connection
While the debate over who the Dallas Wings should get is still ongoing, many are discounting one edge Azzi Fudd has over the others, and that is the connection between UConn head coach Geno Auriemma and new Dallas Wings head coach Fernandez. The two are reportedly good friends, with Fernandez having a complimentary style to Auriemma.
Fernandez’s style would be a good fit for Fudd, and of course, she is known to work well with Dallas’ biggest star, her girlfriend Paige Bueckers.
However, the Wings do not need a guard right now was the team just extended a core, super-max offer to Arike Ogunbowale, which could make drafting Fudd complicated. Despite this, Dallas could still move things around and make a few trades.
