Chicago Sky’s Kamilla Cardoso gave a shoutout to former coach Dawn Staley after she made WNBA history on Friday night. Cardoso broke Nneka Ogwumike’s record for most consecutive field goals made without a miss after going 13 of 13 from the field to score 30 points in the Sky’s 124-94 win over the Portland Fire.
Cardoso knew it was one of those nights after she read an encouraging text from Staley at halftime, when she was 7-for-7 from the field. The Sky center revealed Staley’s text after the game:
“(She said), ‘Just keep playing hard, Millie. I’m super proud of you.’ She texts me all the time. Just to make me feel confident and to let me know she’s always in my corner.”
WNBA reporter Kareem Copeland asked the question and Cardoso credited her former college coach for inspiring her special night.
Cardoso has faced major ups and downs this season despite becoming the sole franchise cornerstone following Angel Reese’s departure. She started the season hot with a 22-point outing on opening night. She then had several single-digit scoring games.
However, Cardoso has turned the tide over the past week and a half. In her last seven games, she has averaged 16.9 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.7 blocks. The former Gamecocks star is shooting 75.4% from the field in that span.
Her latest game led the Sky to consecutive wins for the first time since May 13, when Chicago started the year on a 2-0 run.
Sky veteran Courtney Vandersloot continues to expect greatness from Kamilla Cardoso
Sky veteran Courtney Vandersloot is expecting such a performance from Kamilla Cardoso on a nightly basis. Vandersloot felt Cardoso was due for a game like this, owing to her production over the past few outings. Appearing on the podium alongside the third-year big, Vandersloot said:
“She was incredible. You know, I think that it’s been trending that way for a while … she’s been playing awesome, and you know, she has the capability to do that. And, you know, we’re gonna ride this wave and keep expecting this from her.”
Kamilla Cardoso wasn’t the only one breaking the records. The Sky collectively achieved a historic milestone after smashing the record for most assists in a game with 38. Meanwhile, Cardoso’s rookie teammate, Sydney Taylor, recorded the most efficient 25-point game by a rookie in WNBA history.
Taylor scored 29 points, shooting 8 of 11 from the field, including 6 of 7 from three-point range and 7 of 7 from the free throw line.
