Caitlin Clark was ruled out of the Indiana Fever’s game against the Los Angeles Sparks after a back injury during Wednesday’s 111-109 loss to the Phoenix Mercury. There was a controversial incident involving Mercury’s Alyssa Thomas, who was later suspended for one game after her hit on Clark.
Following the news, College Basketball legend Dick Vitale took to social media to express his frustration over the situation.
“It is amazing that @CaitlinClark22, who has brought so much publicity for the @WNBA, has to take so much abuse from many of those that she has helped financially since her arrival. The physical pounding she takes is totally UNACCEPTABLE!”
Many fans agreed with Vitale’s assessment, arguing that Clark has not received enough protection from officials.
One frustrated fan commented, tagging WNBA: “Shut down the bankrupt league.”
One fan wrote: “Thank you so much for speaking on this! It hurts my heart.”
“She should quit WNBA and play in Europe. They’d appreciate her,” another wrote.
“Agreed. She should quit and see how that works out for everyone,” one user wrote.
Another user wrote: “It’s the strangest thing ever. A league that has been gasping since day 1, and this is how they are literally ripping up a winning Powerball ticket.”
Caitlin Clark’s Injury Adds to Growing Conversation
Head coach Stephanie White confirmed that Caitlin Clark would miss Saturday’s game against Los Angeles and said there is currently “no indication” regarding how long she could be sidelined.
The timing gives Indiana some breathing room, as the Fever will have a week-long break before returning to action on July 5 against the Las Vegas Aces.
Clark averaged 21.2 points, 8.2 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game this season, continuing to play a major role in Indiana’s offense.
With Alyssa Thomas serving a one-game suspension and Clark sidelined with another injury, conversations surrounding player safety and officiating have intensified.
Vitale’s latest comments added another prominent voice to a debate that has dominated headlines throughout the week, as fans continue to call for greater protection of one of the league’s biggest stars.
