UConn may not have won the national title this year, but senior guard Azzi Fudd still has a very high draft stock. She is often projected to be picked around the top 5, with many hoping for a reunion with girlfriend Paige Bueckers over at the Dallas Wings.
However, other teams are also chomping at the bit to draft her should Dallas decide to go with somebody else.
Her earliest projection could be No. 1, and that is where things get complicated, as that pick belongs to the Wings. Dallas reportedly wants a center but could go for Fudd to keep Bueckers happy.
The two led UConn to a national title last year and have a lot of chemistry, so many expect Bueckers to improve when Fudd is around. The team might not get the center they reportedly wanted, but they now have a proven backcourt duo.
However, should Dallas go for another player, her likeliest draft projection would be as the No. 3 overall pick, possibly going to the Seattle Storm, which needs a good shooting guard. This could give the team a massive boost in scoring, as she averaged 17.8 points, 2.6 rebounds and three assists per game with a 49.5% field goal percentage and a 45.4% three-point field goal percentage.
Seattle currently has veteran Brittany Sykes as their shooting guard, but they could let her go or bench her to make way for Fudd. Nonetheless, the odds of them getting her still lie with Dallas, which could go for her or another player.
Several outlets believe she could go No. 3, though the biggest X factor could be her relationship with Paige Bueckers. However, a different USA Today mock draft also has her going No. 1 and not No. 3.
Azzi Fudd Could Make History If Dallas Drafts Her
For Azzi Fudd, it is either Dallas or Seattle, but should she go No. 1 overall, she and Paige Bueckers could go down in history as the first couple to ever be drafted by the same team as No. 1 overall. There have been previous couples playing on the same team, but rarely have they both gone No. 1 and been drafted by the same team.
Paige Bueckers was infamously the Wings’ first overall pick last year after she led UConn to the national championship alongside her girlfriend, Fudd. She soon blossomed into an All-Star during her rookie year, and many believe the only missing piece for her is Fudd.
