As the South Carolina Gamecocks navigate March Madness, star guard Raven Johnson continues to deliver for her team in her final college basketball season. Johnson will leave the Gamecocks after her fifth and final CBB campaign, with the illustrious guard touted to join the WNBA ranks come next season.
Arguably one of South Carolina’s most decorated hoopers, A’ja Wilson, had nothing but praise for Johnson. In a recent interview with ESPN writer Sean Hurd, the Las Vegas Aces’ star center had nothing but sweet things to say about the college career Johnson has had so far.
“To see her just weather storms – like when people would talk about her – she’s showing up the next season, like , heard you. That type of stuff is what really is amazing to me when it comes to Ray. I’m so grateful to watch her grow. I’m grateful to see her thrive,” Wilson said.
When asked about the most impressive thing about Johnson’s career, Wilson praised her habit of bouncing back from setbacks, a quality she thinks isn’t talked about enough, and added that she’s proud of her.
“We’re talking about somebody that can count on her hand how many times she’s lost — that doesn’t get talked about enough for me. … I’m so proud of her.”
Having garnered a total of 1000 points in 150 games for the Gamecocks, it’s safe to say that Johnson has etched her name as one of the program’s modern-day greats.
How Has Raven Johnson Fared So Far This Season?
Much of the Gamecocks’ success this season can be attributed to Johnson’s output. She is averaging 10.0 points, 3.9 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game and has played an integral role in their run to the Sweet 16.
One of her notable performances this season came in the SEC tournament semifinals against LSU, when she dropped an impressive 22 points to help her side win 83-77.
Dawn Staley’s Gamecocks will face the Oklahoma Sooners in the Sweet 16, and Johnson will hope to play a starring role once again.
