There is no doubt that Kim Mulkey will go down in history as one of the greatest women’s basketball coaches ever, winning four NCAA championships, making five Final Four appearances and winning the AP Coach of the Year thrice. However, many are now saying that she might be retiring soon.
Rumors are now popping up left and right that Kim Mulkey will soon be retiring, especially on X. However, Louisiana sports personality Jacques Doucet is saying that this is all fake news. He took to social media to shoot down these false claims:
“Nobody has ever seen or met these “people” in person. They have never covered an @LSUwbkb game, press conference, practice, nothing.” he said.
Right now, Kim Mulkey is still leading the LSU Tigers, though they have already been eliminated during March Madness as one of the four No. 2 seeds in the tournament. The Tigers were upset by No. 3 Duke during the Sweet 16 round, and this is what sparked all those rumors that she will be retiring soon, as the Tigers have not won the title since 2023, when Angel Reese was still playing for her.
While Mulkey and the Tigers may have been eliminated earlier than expected, her job seems to still be secure over at Baton Rouge, and she herself is also shutting down those rumors, saying that she is not going anywhere anytime soon.
Kim Mulkey Herself Clarifies She Will Not Be Retiring Yet
After being eliminated by Duke, Kim Mulkey finally addressed those retirement rumors during a postgame interview:
“I’m not retiring. Do I look that bad?” Mulkey said. “I don’t know where that came from. I’m only 63. And I’m healthy, with a few stents in my heart. Doctor says I’m good to go … As we get older, as coaches, they want to say, ‘How much longer is she going to be in the game?’ I’m going to be in this game unless LSU fires me, OK, until I can’t put a product on that floor that’s competitive, or my health fails me.”
Mulkey has been the LSU head coach since 2021, and she has led the Tigers to the NCAA Tournament since arriving there. This outright rejection of those retirement rumors means that Tigers fans still have their Hall of Fame-level coach leading the team.
