Aaliyah Edwards Shares Azzi Fudd and UConn Stars’ Honest Reactions as Advice Turns Heads

Former UConn Huskies player and Connecticut Sun star Aaliyah Edwards attended Wednesday’s game against Xavier, where UConn named her in the Huskies of Honor. Her No. 3 joins 23 other Huskies, including Diana Taurasi, Maya Moore, Sue Bird, Breanna Stewart and Swin Cash.

At the event, Edwards talked about the immense growth witnessed in two current Huskies players, KK Arnold and Ashlynn Shade. Both were just freshmen when Edwards was in her senior year before being selected in the 2024 WNBA draft. She also shared the same for UConn star guard Azzi Fudd, expressing pride over their growth.

“It’s surreal. I was actually sitting with Caroline at shootaround, and we were just talking about it,” Edwards said. “Everyone’s growing up, and it goes by this quick. To see how far KK has grown, I know she just got on the Defensive Player of the Year watch list, so I’m super proud of her. AZ was also my freshman, Caroline as well, Yana, all those people. I’m just super proud of how far they’ve come.”

Edwards also recalled how these players took her advice and are making UConn proud.

“A lot of the stuff I told them back in the day that they needed to be cautious of, they’re like, ‘Wow, Lili, you really did know what you were talking about.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m older than you guys. I’ve been through what you guys are going through right now,’” Edwards added. “I’m just super proud of them, and as I said, hopefully they get that second natty because all the work that they’ve put in, they definitely deserve it.”

After 21 games, Azzi Fudd is averaging 17.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 2.2 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game. KK Arnold has averaged 7.2 points, 2.1 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.7 steals and 0.1 blocks in 20 games. Meanwhile, Ashlynn Shade is averaging 7.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.6 steals after 21 games. Together, the trio has played a big hand in UConn’s 22-0 unbeaten season so far.

Aaliyah Edwards Feels Iconic After Getting Her Name in UConn Rafters

It was an iconic moment for Aaliyah Edwards to see her No. 3 jersey belong in the same company as the 23 other Huskies players who have contributed immensely to the program.

“Its not something I worked to achieve, but to get this honor is just amazing,” Edwards said. “It’s more than just honoring myself, it’s honoring my family as well, and everyone who helped play a part for me to achieve this. Also, the fact that I am one of 24 athletes up there is iconic.”

Edwards, who joined UConn in 2020, played four seasons and finished with over 1,800 career points and over 1,000 rebounds. She earned the nod for Big East All-Tournament team (2023) and AP Third Team All-American (2023).
