Azzi Fudd became the first pick in the WNBA draft. Naturally she was under keen eyes of the fans as well as the analysts. As it would happen with any basketball of Fudd’s talent, there has been critical judgement of her WNBA performances. Moreover, her lack of minutes and coming off the bench decision by coach Jose Fernandez was highly questioned.
In her UConn career, shooting, sharpness and directness on the court was the main feature of Azzi Fudd’s game. She was always considered generational, but her injuries came in the way for the most part. However, when she did play fully fit, coach Geno Auriemma often brought the best of Fudd.
The expectation and pressure is always high when a player can play on that court like Azzi Fudd can. And who can know that better than A’ja Wilson. Coming from the Dawn Staley school, Wilson has always showcased brilliant composure under pressure along with the abundance of talent she has. Before facing Azzi Fudd for the first time, 3x MVP was asked about ex-UConn star’s transition into the WNBA.
“Yeah, thoughts about it. I mean, it was a smooth transition. I feel like she was someone that I always felt like was going to have a smooth transition because of her approach to the game. It’s very professional-like already. Even in college, I feel like in college, I would always have slip ups, but it felt like when it came to Azzi, she just was so steady minded always, her mental is always so tough,” A’ja Wilson said about Azzi Fudd at 1:50.
“So her transition, it doesn’t come by any surprise by me. I think she’s doing a great job. I think obviously she’s going to have her ups and downs that comes with being a rookie, but I think she’s handling it really well,” A’ja added.
Azzi Fudd shines with 22 points in first WNBA start vs A’ja Wilson’s Aces
Azzi Fudd really came to her own when head coach Jose Fernandez started her for the first time in her WNBA career. That to against A’ja Wilson’s Aces. Fudd was one of the best players on the court as Dallas Wings completed an inspiring comeback.
In 38 minutes played, Fudd scored 22 points with 3 rebounds and 2 assists. She shot 9-15 from the field and 3-5 three pointers. Dallas Wings were trailing by 8 points when the first half ended. They made a strong comeback and ended up winning the contest 95-87.
