James Franklin has kick-started his Virginia Tech coaching tenure with multiple four-star recruits, including quarterback Peter Boroque and defensive standout Joseph Buchanan. Franklin added another four-star to the list, securing the signing of tight end Jordan Karhoff.
Karhoff, the seventh-best tight end of the 2027 recruiting class, becomes the 15th commit of the year for Franklin and Director of Player Personnel Mike Villagrana. The class now ranks 18th in the country and third best in the ACC, behind Miami and Clemson, per On3.
However, Karhoff choosing Virginia Tech Over Mario Cristobal’s Miami has gotten mixed reactions from college football fans. Shortly after the announcement, fans took to Twitter (formerly X) to voice their opinions.

Another fan expressed their excitement, saying:
Hokies are rolling! Wow! – @hokiefan4949
One fan mentioned the lack of Ohio State’s effort in signing Karhoff:
What Can Virginia Tech Expect From Jordan Karhoff?
Standing at 6-foot-4, Karhoff flaunts a huge frame that can be added to VT’s front line. However, the Columbus native has shown flashes of quickness as well as vertical reach, making him a perfect target to make plays for the Hokies.
While his offensive talent stood out in Karhoff’s junior year, the four-star athlete also took snaps as a linebacker. Karhoff tallied 548 yards and five touchdowns in his 11 junior year games while putting up 56 total tackles with five and a half sacks.
With James Franklin now in charge of the Hokies, Karhoff will be able to follow a clear developmental path with real chances of getting to the NFL. After all, Penn State was given the moniker of ‘Tight End U’ under James Franklin for a reason.
The veteran head coach has developed multiple tight ends, including Pat Freiermuth, Tyler Warren, Mike Gesicki, Brenton Strange, Theo Johnson, and more, who have made a name for themselves on both the college and pro levels.
Karhoff’s decision to pick the Hokies over Miami, as well as his home-state school, Ohio State, was likely swayed because of Franklin being the deciding factor.
