Brian Kelly Tries To Set Record Straight On His “Mischaracterized” Notre Dame Departure

Former LSU Tigers head coach Brian Kelly had a disappointing run at Baton Rouge and was ultimately fired. Before that, however, he was the head coach at Notre Dame, and there was some controversy regarding his exit from South Bend to coach at LSU.

However, Brian Kelly soon clarified some of the issues surrounding his exit from Notre Dame. The former Fighting Irish coach appeared on the Notre Dame podcast, The Independent, and talked about leaving Notre Dame for LSU, noting that he had been “mischaracterized” for it.

“I didn’t leave Notre Dame because they couldn’t win a national championship. Those words never came out of my mouth,” Brian Kelly clarified. “What I said was if I’m going to leave, I’m going to go to a place that can win a national championship. And that was perceived as being, ‘Oh, he doesn’t think he can win one here.’ So, look, I think we all know this, dipping my toe into the media a little bit, there is never a great time. The timing stinks. And it stinks mostly for the players, but it’s not easy on the coaches either.”

Brian Kelly left Notre Dame in 2022, leaving behind a 113-40 record during his tenure. His departure for LSU shocked many, though he was unable to match his success with the Fighting Irish. He ended his career with the Tigers with a 34-14 record.

Brian Kelly Now A Broadcaster With New CBS Job

Despite Brian Kelly being out of a job at LSU, he did not stay unemployed for long, as he has been hired as a broadcast analyst for CBS Sports. The former LSU and Notre Dame head coach is expected to be part of a three-man broadcast team for Mountain West games over at the network.

Kelly started as an NFL draft analyst for CBS last spring, so he would have some experience in broadcasting and imparting his knowledge on college players on air.
