Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar grabbed headlines last week after filing a case against the NCAA over its eligibility rules regarding former junior college players. Aguilar is reportedly seeking to regain his NCAA eligibility to play one more year with the Vols in 2026.
Aguilar and his attorney, Cam Norris, are currently at Knox County Chancery Court for the QB’s preliminary injunction hearing. To help Aguilar return to Tennessee for the 2026 season, Norris outlined the financial implications of the player not having one more year of college eligibility.
Norris said that Aguilar could lose $2 million to $4 million if he is not allowed to play for the Vols next season.
Aguilar has spent seven seasons at the collegiate level. He began his collegiate career at City College of San Francisco in 2019 but redshirted as a freshman. Meanwhile, his 2020 season with the program was cancelled due to COVID-19.
After two years at City College of San Francisco, Aguilar transferred to Diablo Valley College, where he played for two years. He spent a total of four years at junior college, with his stints at Diablo Valley and City College of San Francisco.
In 2023, Aguilar transferred to Appalachian State, where he played for two years. The signal-caller transferred to Tennessee for the 2025 season.
NCAA Attorney Taylor Askew Aims Dig at Joey Aguilar During Court Hearing
During Joey Aguilar’s preliminary injunction hearing on Friday, NCAA attorney Taylor Askew aimed a cheeky dig at the Tennessee quarterback.
“We didn’t know who he (Aguilar) was until Nico (Iamaleava) left … I appreciate everything you’ve done for Tennessee,” Askew said. “I love Tennessee football, I grew up in Knoxville … Tennessee has to say ‘We’re better than this.'”
If the judge grants the injunction, it is likely to pave the way for Aguilar to play at Tennessee for the 2026 season. If not, he might have to turn his focus to the NFL Draft.
