Former Texas Longhorns receiver Collin Johnson announced his retirement from football on May 21. Johnson played for the Longhorns from 2016 to 2019. He was a fifth round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Johnson joined three more teams after his short stint with the Jaguars. He signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in May last year and was released by the franchise in August. He is only 28 years old.
So, why did the star wide receiver retire from football? We see many athletes try to find their way back into college sports by looking for remaining eligibility, among other methods. Johnson is also going back to college, but for a completely different reason.
The wide receiver took to Instagram to announce his retirement from football. In the same post, he mentioned that he will join the MIT Sloan School of Management to pursue an MBA.
“I’m grateful to share that I’ll be enrolling at MIT Sloan this fall to pursue my MBA. At the same time, I’ve made the decision to retire from the NFL,” he wrote.
Johnson wrote that football has shaped his life and has taught him things he will continue to apply in his life, even after retirement.
“Football has shaped my life in more ways than I can put into words. It taught me faith, discipline, resilience, leadership, and how to compete at the highest level. I’m thankful for every teammate, coach, organization, and person who helped me along the way.”
Johnson said that he will continue to build Beyond-Sports and will launch Founders Academy in partnership with MITdesignX. He believes that athletes are often seen as endorsers of other people’s companies, and he wants to establish that athletes can be founders, too.
Texas Head Coach Has Stirred Up a Controversy
The Texas Longhorns head coach, Steve Sarkisian, recently took shots at the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Even though he didn’t mention any names, his comment can only be associated with one team.
“There’s a team in our state that plays in another conference that has a schedule that I would argue if I played with our twos and our threes,” he said. “We could go undefeated, and they’ll probably make the College Football Playoff this year.”
Sarkisian has received backlash over his comment. He has also been called out by Cody Campbell, who challenged the Longhorns head coach to schedule a matchup so the two teams can battle it out on the ground.
