During the ongoing ATX Open in Texas, a controversy erupted, prompting the WTA to issue an urgent clarification on social media. The issue arose during Alycia Parks and Oksana Selekhmeteva’s first-round match, when broadcasters briefly displayed Selekhmeteva’s national flag (Russia) on the scorecard.
The moment sparked controversy because both the ATP and WTA have mandated policies not to showcase the Russian flag for their native players since the Russia-Ukraine war broke out almost four years ago. Punto de Break director José Morón highlighted the issue in his social media post.
“It seems that the WTA is already displaying the Russian flag for players from that country. The ATP, for the moment, is not doing so. I find the WTA’s criteria to be quite inconsistent when it comes to making decisions of this magnitude. In the case of Shuai Peng, they decided not to compete in China until the matter was resolved,” Moron wrote.
“A couple of years later, with it still unresolved, they decided to return to playing there. With this, more of the same. They initially decided to remove it for a reason that remains unresolved, so it’s hard to understand why they’re putting it back now,” he further added.
Subsequently, Moron shared the WTA’s clarification, issued when the issue came to their attention. “I just confirmed with the WTA itself that their policy of not displaying the Russian flag has not changed. If the flag was seen in any match (or the Ukrainian one was not seen), it is due to a technical error. Everything will continue as it has until now,” Moron wrote on X.
The ATX Open Did a First-of-Its-Kind Move During the WTA 250 Event
Following Coco Gauff’s viral outburst after her heartbreaking quarterfinal loss to Elina Svitolina at the Australian Open, the ATX Open has introduced a rage room. This first-of-its-kind facility provides players with a private, camera-free environment to express their frustration or emotions in a safe space.
The WTA 250 event in Austin, TX, will end on March 1, after which two WTA 1000-level events will commence, one after the other, in the USA: the Indian Wells Open and the Miami Open, set to feature all the top names in women’s tennis.
