Alexander Zverev had just faced a crushing loss at the Wimbledon final against reigning champion Jannik Sinner, and the German’s premature celebration after claiming the opening set has led Serena Williams’ coach to criticize his early celebration.

At the Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast, Coach Stubbs criticized Zverev for his over-the-top celebration for acting as though the title was just within reach after winning just the first set against Jannik Sinner, despite needing to win two more sets.

“Do you remember when he turned around and yelled ‘Come on!’ towards his box? It was really over the top. I thought to myself, ‘Dude, you still have two sets to win against the best player in the world.’ I got the impression he thought he was going to win the tournament after that, and I thought, ‘No way.’”

As per ‘We Love Tennis,’ Stubbs then admitted that Zverev had impressed her with an improvement in his forehand shots, which have considerably been the German’s weakness during pressure, but also confirmed that she knew Sinner had the match the moment Zverev missed a forehand shot in the second-set tiebreak.

“On set point, he unleashed a blistering forehand. Every time he had the chance to hit a powerful forehand, Zverev did it. I thought, ‘Wow. Is this a new Zverev? Could this be the day?’ As soon as he missed that forehand in the second-set tiebreak, it was over.”

Despite an improvement on his forehand, Stubbs believes that Zverev’s ultimate downfall at the All England Club came when he missed the shot at the second set tiebreak.

    Alexander Zverev’s 2026 Wimbledon Campaign

The 2026 Wimbledon tournament became the first where Alexander Zverev marked an appearance at the final since making his All England Club debut in 2015. Despite being a one-time runner-up at the US and Australian Open, and having won Roland Garros this year, the German has historically struggled to replicate the same success on grass.

It all changed this year after the Roland Garros champion defeated Taylor Fritz and Arthur Fery at the quarterfinals and at the semifinal en route to a deep run into the final.

However, the German fell to the world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in a grueling 6(7)-7, 7-6(2), 6-3, 6-4 four sets.

With the recent improvements on grass, it remains to be seen if Zverev could carry over the newly acquired form on his forehand and use that to swing well at the upcoming hard court season.
