Tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou snubbed Alexander Zverev for the best player in men’s tennis not to win a Grand Slam. Mouratoglou, the former coach of Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka, knows the game well and keenly understands its dynamics.
He is a vociferous speaker on all matters related to the sport and never backs down from sharing his strong opinions. In his latest breakdown of the best players who did not win a Grand Slam, Mouratoglou shared four names, with Zverev coming in at No. 3.
“I have a different top 4, which is the four guys that were so close to winning a Grand Slam because at their peak they should have, but they just missed the opportunity. So first, Marcelo Ríos. He had his chance at the Australian Open against Korda. The second I would name is [Guillermo] Coria. At the peak of his career, he played the final of Roland Garros when he was leading two sets to love against [Gastón] Gaudio, and he ended up losing it,” Mouratoglou said.
Coria had a 0-3 record against Roger Federer and a 1-4 record against Rafael Nadal.
“Then, of course, I think of Zverev, who also had twice the chance in between the domination of Novak, Roger, Rafa, and before the domination of Sinner/Alcaraz. He played the final of the US Open against [Dominic] Thiem, and he played the final of Roland Garros against Alcaraz… He was up two sets to one, again, he didn’t win it,” he added.
“And then I have to speak about [David] Nalbandian, because he reached the semifinal of the four Grand Slams and once to the Wimbledon final. He got killed against [Lleyton] Hewitt in that final because he was unable to play his level. When he was playing his level, a lot of times he was able to beat Roger and Rafa at their peak,” Mourtaglou concluded.
Patrick Mouratoglou Professed Learning From Olympic Champion Eileen Gu
One of the most successful freestyle skiers in Olympic history, Eileen Gu, addressed a press conference after winning a gold medal at the recent Milano-Cortina Winter Games and said that sports instill honesty and a structured mindset from an early age. Mouratoglou was quick to notice the interview and shared his opinion on the lessons the young generation can learn from Gu’s interview.
“This champion is a skier. She’s not a tennis player. Even as a tennis player, you have so much to learn from her. We as parents, we always want our children to have the best values, the values that are necessary in order to be successful in life and make the life they want,” Mouratoglou said.
“What parents do in general is talking to their children, explaining to their children, which is good, but the best is not to hear it is to experience it. And that’s why I’ve always said tennis and school. This program is the best possible because it’s a combination of academics, learning what is necessary for life, but also living and experiencing every single day,” he added.
