A tennis insider questioned Jannik Sinner’s relationship with Roger Federer on Wednesday, pointing to the Swiss’ absence from the Wimbledon men’s singles final and the Italian’s continued absence from the Laver Cup.
Sinner successfully defended his Wimbledon title on Sunday, defeating Alexander Zverev 6-7(9), 7-6(2), 6-3, 6-4. While several high-profile figures, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, attended the match, Federer, despite being at Wimbledon during the tournament, was not seen at the men’s singles final.
Shortly after the Grand Slam concluded, the Laver Cup, which is organized by Federer, announced its player lineup, featuring Carlos Alcaraz, Rafa Jodar, Alexander Zverev, Jakub Mensik, and Flavio Cobolli. Sinner, who was once again absent from the roster, has never competed in the tournament.
Reflecting on the Swiss’ absence at Sinner’s final and the Italian not competing in his tournament, the insider raised questions on the duo’s friendship on X, writing:
“The Italian still hasn’t participated in the Laver Cup, the tournament organized by Roger. I thought he would this year, but no. Plus, they don’t follow each other on Instagram, and there are very few joint appearances. They say Roger was at Wimbledon last Sunday, but he didn’t go to see the final. Maybe there’s nothing to it, but it still surprises me.” [Translated from Spanish]
Roger Federer Weighed In On The Jannik Sinner And Carlos Alcaraz Rivalry
In January, Roger Federer addressed the media at Melbourne Park and shared his thoughts on the rivalry between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. Calling it a “great” one, he praised both players and said that he was impressed with their 2025 French Open final, which lasted 5 hours and 29 minutes, the longest final in the tournament’s history.
“The rivalry with Alcaraz and Sinner is a great one. They play incredible tennis. I think that French Open final was unreal. I think the game, not that it needed it, but it was great that we had it. I feel like for a second, for a moment, the world stood still in the sporting world and watched towards Paris, what was going on in that epic fifth set because it could have ended much, much sooner obviously for Jannik,” Roger Federer said.
He added:
“Then all of a sudden it ended up in this most crazy fashion. Maybe one of the greatest games we’ve ever had in our sport. It’s good we still live off that momentum. Then they backed it up by playing against each other in all those other finals. Everybody is trying to keep up and they’re trying to pull away. What we’ve seen in terms of their progression in the last years, it’s been wonderful. I practised with those guys a little bit. They’re incredible ball strikers. There’s obviously more to come.”
Roger Federer won 103 ATP singles titles during his career, including 20 Grand Slam titles, 28 ATP Masters 1000, 6 ATP Finals, 24 ATP 500, and 25 ATP 250 titles.
