Coco Gauff was extremely frustrated during her loss against Elina Svitolina in the Dubai Tennis Championships semifinals. There came a point in the match when she committed a double fault and turned her anger towards her coaching staff.
She reportedly shouted at her serve specialist, Gavin MacMillan, saying she did everything asked over the last six months and still there were no improvements.
“I’ve been doing everything you wanted for six months… I’m not better at all.”
In the three-set loss against Svitolina, Gauff committed as many as 12 double faults, and is currently at the top of the tour when it comes to faults in 2026 so far.
Former World No. 21 Steve Johnson doesn’t like Gauff shouting towards her coach. He expects a high amount of virtue from Gauff.
“That’s not what you want to be saying mid-match. I said that to my coaches a lot: ‘Why am I playing so bad?’ But that was more of a me issue,” Johnson said on Nothing Major. “She’s much better than me. So you would expect her not to have those kinds of in-match meltdowns.”
MacMillan joined Gauff’s coaching staff this past August ahead of the 2025 US Open after the American parted ways with Matt Daly. He has previously helped the current World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka’s serve and Gauff is expecting the same outcome from him. However, six months into the partnership, and the American is seeing no improvements in her serve.
Coco Gauff Had An Episode in Australian Open Too
Coco Gauff and her frustrations have become a hot topic of late. After she lost in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open last month against Elina Svitolina, she went to a private space and destroyed her racket. However, her frustrating moment was captured and it became a controversial topic among tennis circles.
Gauff and several other tennis stars expressed their disappointment over the invasion of privacy. The American also shared why she chose a private space instead of doing it in public, as she didn’t want to show that side of herself in front of children and her team, who work tirelessly behind the scenes.
It remains to be seen if there is improvement in Gauff’s serve when she takes the court for the Indian Wells tournament.
