A concerning update on Carlos Alcaraz came from Indian Wells during his day off after he won the third round against Arthur Rinderknech. It seems the Spaniard was set to practice on Tuesday before his pre-quarterfinal match against Casper Ruud.
Surprisingly, the Alcaraz team chose to skip practice altogether to focus on managing the reigning Australian Open champion’s ankle. It’s still unclear how Alcaraz might have hurt his ankle, but it will be interesting to see if that affects his match against Ruud on Wednesday.
Tennis analyst and Director of Punto de Break, Jose Moron, was the first to report the latest developments surrounding Alcaraz from Indian Wells. In his social media post, Moron explained the probable reason why the Spaniard would have sat out his training session on Tuesday.
“Alcaraz is taking care of his ankle on his day off at Indian Wells. The player from Murcia had a training slot reserved in Indian Wells, but in the end, they decided not to push it and chose to rest and do recovery work instead,” Moron wrote on X.
If he advances, he would have two consecutive match days coming up, with the Round of 16 on Wednesday and the quarterfinals on Thursday. It’s a good idea not to force the ankle and to save energy. Tomorrow against Ruud, we’ll see if that small issue turns out to be nothing,” he added.
Carlos Alcaraz Remains on Collision Course With Jannik Sinner At Indian Wells
Fans at Indian Wells could very well be treated to a thrilling ‘Sincaraz’ final after not getting to witness the same in Melbourne last month. Carlos Alcaraz is the heavy favorite against Rudd, and should the Spaniard win tonight, he could face Cameron Norrie in the quarterfinals and either Novak Djokovic, defending champion Jack Draper, or Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals.
As for Jannik Sinner, he advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Joao Fonseca in the Round of 16 on Tuesday night and will now take on American rising star Learner Tien. Sinner could face Alexander Zverev in the semifinals, and if he reaches the summit clash, he could take on Alcaraz on Sunday.
After the BNP Paribas Open, the players will head to Florida for the Miami Open (Masters 1000), the Sunshine Swing’s final event in March.
