Amanda Anisimova experienced a surprising exit from the BNP Paribas Open after losing to teenage sensation Victoria Mboko in the fourth round on Tuesday. Anisimova was dominated by the Canadian, who beat her 6-4, 6-1 to move on to the quarterfinals, where she will face World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.
Anisimova struggled with a low first serve win percentage, while Mboko was highly effective at converting break-point chances. The Canadian went 4/4 in break-point conversions, whereas Anisimova went 0/1, resulting in her loss and ending her strong run at Indian Wells.
Fans were quick to voice their mixed reaction to Anisimova’s loss in the WTA 1000 event.
“Amanda choke lol Let GO Sabalenka vs Mboko Match!!” one fan commented.
“Anisimova and the 5 slams her fans said she will win this year now have one more player to avoid en route to the 5 slams,” another fan commented.
“Last year’s superstars, Andreeva and Anisimova, performed so poorly this year. Where is there consistency?” yet another fan commented.
Some other fans praised Mboko’s playing style, with one commenting her service game was reminiscent of tennis legend Serena Williams.
“Those three aces in a row were Serena-like. Amanda never moved or put a racquet on the balls!” one fan commented.
“Good win from Mboko Anisimova keeps exposing herself,” another fan commented.
“Oh, gave Amanda the business, my goodness!!” yet another fan commented.
Amanda Anisimova’s Disappointing Run In 2026 Continues With Indian Wells Loss
Last year’s Wimbledon and US Open finalist, Amanda Anisimova, is without a title at the start of 2026. She had a poor run in the Australian swing, which was compounded by an early exit in the Qatar Open and a semifinal exit in the Dubai Open.
While many would have predicted the American to perform well in the Sunshine Swing, her early exit at Indian Wells tells a different story. Anisimova has failed to play her brand of tennis in recent tournaments, resulting in inconsistent play.
For now, the 24-year-old will shift her focus to the final WTA 1000 event of the Sunshine Swing in Miami, which starts on February 16, before the players prepare for the clay-court swing starting in April.
