Carlos Alcaraz failed to defend his No. 1 title against Jannik Sinner. The Spaniard needed to keep Sinner from winning the Monte-Carlo Masters to continue at No. 1, but the Italian defeated Alcaraz in straight sets to reclaim the throne.
However, it’s not all lost for Alcaraz and there is a way for him to reclaim the No. 1 ranking from Sinner.
How Carlos Alcaraz Can Become World No. 1 Again This Week At Barcelona Open
After the Monte-Carlo Masters final, Jannik Sinner has become the No. 1-ranked ATP star with 13,400 points, as Carlos Alcaraz trails him with 13,240 points. With the Barcelona Open starting next week, Alcaraz has an opportunity to get back to No. 1.
If the Spaniard wins in Barcelona, Alcaraz would boost his ranking points to 13,410, taking the throne back from Sinner, who would potentially drop down to 13,400 points.
It is easier said than done, though, given Alcaraz’s latest form and Sinner’s insane dominance this month.
Before coming to Monte-Carlo, Sinner became the first person in history to win the Sunshine Double (Indian Wells Masters and Miami Open) without dropping a set. Meanwhile, Alcaraz lost to Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells semifinals and the Round of 32 exit in Miami against Sebastian Korda. Against Medvedev, he went down in straight sets, while the match against Korda stretched to three sets.
Carlos Alcaraz Uncertain to Play in Barcelona
Speaking to reporters after the Monte-Carlo Masters finals, Carlos Alcaraz didn’t confirm his participation in Barcelona next week. He will let his body decide rather than pushing to play in each and every tournament on clay before suiting up at Roland Garros to defend his French Open title.
“Well, I don’t know, the main goal is to play the full clay season calendar,” he said. “Let’s see how it’s gonna be. It was the goal last year as well, and unfortunately I couldn’t because I was injured… We are touching wood and praying that nothing’s going to happen to my body. I listen to my body much better than last year, for sure. If I’m gonna skip one, I will skip one tournament. If my body stays healthy, I’m going to do whatever it takes.”
It remains to be seen whether Alcaraz turns up for the tournament in Barcelona and do the needful to get back the No. 1 ranking.
