Joao Fonseca recently highlighted the difference between facing Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner following his second-round exit at the Miami Open. He competed at the Hard Rock Stadium days after concluding his run at Indian Wells, where he faced the Italian tennis superstar Jannik Sinner.
Although the World No.2 bested the 19-year-old tennis player, the Brazilian pushed Sinner to two tie-breaks in California. Sinner advanced to the next round in California after a 7-6(6), 7-6(4) victory.
Following this, Fonseca competed in his first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting against the Spanish star. Alcaraz dominated the faceoff on Friday night at the stadium court with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. The Spaniard dominated the center of the court on his first serve and won 80 percent (35/44) of points behind his first delivery.
Following the match, Fonseca stated that playing against Sinner gave him confidence to face Alcaraz, whose game is more versatile and unpredictable. He opined that while Sinner’s game is consistent, Alcaraz breaks the rhythm quite often with slices, topspin, and angles.
“I think Alcaraz has more arsenal than Sinner. Sinner is more like a robot that just kills the ball and does everything perfect,” Fonseca said. “Carlos, he can do everything. He can do with topspin, can fire the ball, he has good movement. Goes to the net. He has everything. It’s more difficult to understand the game. He breaks a lot your rhythm.”
“I think Jannik’s game helped me to enter the court with no fear, trying to play my game,” Fonseca added. “But I think I didn’t got the opportunities that I had, and of course he played good. He’s No. 1 in the world. But I need to think about my mistakes and try to improve.”
Jannik Sinner will kickoff his 2026 Miami Open run against Damir Dzumhur in the round of 64.
Carlos Alcaraz Praises Joao Fonseca’s Skills After Defeating Him at the Miami Open
Carlos Alcaraz competed against Joao Fonseca for the first time at the Miami Open. He saved all three break points and did not allow his opponent to record a single forehand winner in the opening set. However, in an interview following the matchup, he praised the Brazilian and highlighted the approach with which he competed.
“I think I was really good in crucial moments. I was really good since the beginning until the last ball. I know how good Joao is, and that’s why I was really focused, every point, every shot,” said Alcaraz. “I’m just happy to stay calm, to stay positive in those moments. Most of the games, I just served pretty well, which was a really great weapon today for me.”
Carlos Alcaraz will face Sebastian Korda in the round of 32.
