Fans questioned Emma Raducanu after the Brit withdrew her name from the Italian Open due to post-viral illness. Raducanu is in the middle of a difficult season and she has always made the headlines for one more than one reason.
Before making this decision, Raducanu was actively practicing in Rome and even did a press conference. She told reporters she had “turned a corner” in her recovery. However, within minutes, she pulled out of the tournament.
After her latest withdrawal, fans reacted negatively.
“Is she getting the help she needs?” one fan asked. “Always seems ill, injured or changing coaches. All this travelling around the world without playing must be taking its toll.”
“Has she won anything since she randomly won that grand slam ..everytime I see Info about her ..it’s just always injury or withdrawal,” one fan added.
“folks are starting to think her story looks a lot like Ju’s,” one fan wrote.
Meanwhile, there were some fans who defended and supported Raducanu’s decision.
“If you have a post viral condition it can dangerous to push through as it can exacerbate recovery and even in some cases lead to ME / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome which is life changing so I hope people will practice a bit of kindness or restrain from commenting,” one fan wrote.
“post-viral illness is still so understudied… like your body just decides the virus isn’t done with you. and some of you are a bunch of losers for not being empathetic. it’s basically prolonged systemic effects beyond the acute phase of infection. 🥲” another commented.
“The comments just emphasise the lack of understanding of this condition and the damage viruses can cause💔 #mecfs #mcas,” another fan commented.
What Happened to Emma Raducanu?
Emma Raducanu first contracted a virus during the Middle East swing. Since then, she has been struggling with fatigue and lingering illness symptoms. As a result, she has missed multiple tournaments, including the Miami Open and the Madrid Open. She did appear in Indian Wells but was defeated in the Round of 32 at the hands of Amanda Anisimova.
In Rome, Raducanu had a first-round bye. Her latest withdrawal puts her French Open participation in a big uncertainty as the tournament starts after just one week post the Rome Masters.
Missing more and major tournaments will continue to make her drop in the WTA rankings. With 1430 points, she is currently ranked at No. 30. However, there is a good chance that she would be outside the top 30 at the end of the Rome Masters.
