“Who Would Have Ever Thought a Top Coach Would Beg to Keep Wrestlers?” – Fans React to Stanford’s Chris Ayres Heartbreaking Transfer Portal Plea

Fans online recently backed Stanford wrestling coach Chris Ayres, who shared his blunt view on the program being affected by the NIL benefits and transfer portals. He began his statement by highlighting how the program’s wrestler Aden Valencia celebrated his NCAA win with his teammates, showcasing the strong culture and bond.

However, he further highlighted how the program’s top wrestlers are considering entering the transfer portal after other programs are offering lucrative amounts. He emphasized Stanford’s approach of building the wrestling program by focusing on development and long-term growth, but added that retaining elite wrestlers is becoming difficult.

Wrestling fans backed The Matt Gentry head coach, with one of them blaming the NIL policies. The fan wrote:

“Portal is killing Athletics. NIL needs serious guardrails.
Another fan opined that US President Donald Trump’s plan on NIL, which includes putting a cap on how much athletes can earn through deals, is a perfect solution for the situation.
“NIL went too far. Trumps and Tuberville plans make sense,” another fan added.
A fan praised coach Ayres and slammed the flawed system.

“Unbelievable. Chris is an awesome dude. I remember him at Princeton and the success he had there. The climate of college athletics is nuts. I understand wanting to get money while you can, but he makes such a good point about these are the guys he wanted,” the fan wrote.

    A few more reactions:

“Stinks it’s gotten to this point. Imagine the clarion edindoro of the world. Proud tradition. Cooked. Guy had a top 5 team coming back & lost his entire team in a week,” one of the fans wrote
“Who would have ever thought 10 years ago that a top college coach from a top college program would have to beg to keep his wrestlers,” another fan added.
“Poor little Stanford. I feel bad for Coach, he’s definitely not getting the support he needs but this is the only sport that Oklahoma State has the money to compete with the top,” one of the fans opined

Stanford’s wrestler Aden Valencia Opens Up On Competing for the Program

Aden Valencia of Stanford Wrestling opened up about his choice to compete for the program, saying the degree from the particular university is important. In an interview, he highlighted that continuing to compete for Stanford will open multiple opportunities for him in the future.
“Yeah, I’m not going anywhere; the Stanford degree is the most important thing to me, and that’s part of the reason why I came to Stanford, because I wanted a career outside wrestling and when it’s all set and done, I’ll still have a lot of other things I would wanna do and so getting that Stanford degree would really be life changing for me,” he said (3:54).
Nico Provo, Tyler Knox, Hunter Garvin, and Lorenzo Norman from Stanford have entered the transfer portal.
