”Only Getting Started” – Danny Vega Makes Feelings Known on Son Sergio Vega Taking Over the National Wrestling Stage

Danny Vega experienced the proud father moment when the news broke of his son, Sergio Vega, winning his first NCAA title. Danny highlighted how hard and resilient the road to victory for Sergio was and how he let the odds take a back seat and went ahead to achieve what he had always dreamed of.

Sergio has claimed prestigious victories in the recent wrestling seasons. During the NCAA D1 wrestling championships this season, the Oklahoma Cowboy squared off against the former two-time national champion Jesse Mendez of Ohio and beat him in overtime to bag the national title.

Becoming the very first undefeated freshman, Vega’s NCAA win sparked enormous acclaim from the sports community. Danny, Sergio’s dad and coach, spoke with great pride about how much this win meant to the entire Vega family and added that this is just the beginning of a new saga.

“He’s worked hard, he’s worked extremely hard, and he’s gone through a lot. He didn’t have the success that a lot of our other club wrestlers had at an early age. Now with this win, he’s not done, he’s only getting started,” said Danny Vega.

Danny Vega also spoke about how Sergio always faced losses in his early days, and at one point, he had contemplated giving up wrestling. Nonetheless, as per his dad, the family kept cheering on small matches and victories to keep the momentum going.

Danny also lauded Sergio’s wrestling acumen, as he revealed that Sergio would always watch playbacks of old-school wrestling, including his own matches, to figure out the best way to develop.

Sergio Vega Reflects on the Jesse Mendez Upset

During the NCAA D1 finals, Sergio Vega came in as the No. 2 seed but spun the wrestling community by beating the No. 1 seed Jesse Mendez with a 4-1 decision in overtime.

Despite the minimal seed difference, beating the No. 1 player was a huge upset, and Vega spoke about how satisfactory the win felt, highlighting that he was written off against Mendez by the sports community.

“People were writing me off so much, but it was giving me so much confidence like they thought ‘he’s gonna whop this kid’ and I was like just so excited to prove them wrong,” he said (4:01).

As mentioned by his dad, Sergio Vega is eyeing multiple championship wins in the seasons ahead and has vowed to prove his critics wrong through consistent dominance on the mat.
