Ben Ogden made history by winning a silver medal in men’s cross-country skiing at the Winter Olympics. It’s a significant moment in American history as the last time the country won a medal in the event was 50 years ago by Bill Koch in the 1976 Winter Olympics held in Innsbruck, Austria.
Ogden’s silver was only the second Olympic medal for America in cross-country skiing. The American finished behind Norway’s Johannes Høsflot Klæbo. Another ski racer from Norway, Oskar Opstad Vike, bagged the bronze medal.
Ben Ogden’s Background
Ben Ogden, born on Feb. 13, 2000, hails from Vermont and stands 6-feet-4 tall. He grew up in Landgrove, Vermont. Skiing was in his blood as his father coached Nordic skiing and introduced Ben and his siblings to the sport.
Ogden debuted on the World Cup circuit in March 2019 in Quebec City. At the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, Ogden finished 12th in the individual sprint freestyle.
Ben Ogden’s Parents and Siblings
Ben Ogden was born to father John Ogden and mother Andrea Ogden.
John was a former Middlebury College cross-country skier. He coached a ski league in Landgrove, Vermont. Ben’s father died in 2023 after a decade-long battle with cancer.
Katherine, Ogden’s older sister, competed with Dartmouth College in skiing. She also raced internationally with various US developmental teams. Charlotte, Ogden’s younger sister, competed at Middlebury College.
Ben Ogden’s Education
Ben Ogden attended Stratton Mountain School, known for producing elite Nordic skiers, and graduated in 2018. He continued to ski in college, joining the University of Vermont. There, he won NCAA national titles in cross-country events.
At UVM, he graduated in 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Following her graduation, he pursued additional graduate-level coursework at UVM, including a master’s project related to engineering, all while doing competitive skiing.
Ben Ogden Achievements
Apart from his latest silver medal achievement at the 2026 Winter Olympics, Ben Ogden has accomplished several other notable achievements.
He earned the Under-23 Green Bib, awarded to the top male skier under age 23 on the World Cup circuit. He reached eighth overall in the 2022–23 World Cup season.
His first World Cup podium came in December 2023. He finished third in the skate sprint at the Tour de Ski. Last year, he came third in the 10 km skate in Les Rousses, France. With Gus Schumacher in Goms, Switzerland, the pair became the first-ever U.S. men’s team sprint World Cup podium.
Ben Ogden bagged a silver medal in the 4 × 5 km relay at the 2018 Junior World Ski Championships. It was America’s first men’s medal at a Junior Worlds. In 2019 and 2020, he repeated as champion in the same event.
Moreover, during his time in UVM, he was the 2020 NCAA Champion in 10 km freestyle
and 2022 NCAA Champion in 10 km classic and 20 km freestyle. Moreover, Ogden was named Men’s Nordic Skier of the Year by the U.S. Collegiate Ski Coaches Association (USCSCA).
