The wrestling transfer portal continues to rage in full swing as elite programs have yet again bagged promising talents into their rosters. Stanford has successfully retained Hunter Garvin and Tyler Knox, followed by Iowa State landing Brayden Thompson, and Zeke Seltzer, Adonis Bonar II, and Gavin Craner, also finding new homes.
The wrestling transfer portal has formed itself into a free agency window where a single shift can transform an entire wrestling program. For a team like the Cardinals, the portal becomes a battle for retention as they stand big on cultural development. Conversely, other elite programs such as Iowa State and Michigan have been aggressively hunting talent to amplify their roster.
Stanford wrestling head coach Chris Ayres had released an emotional plea earlier this month, suggesting how the portal is ruining the psyche of young athletes who lose the opportunity to be part of a program that focuses on building a long-term sustainable culture, something that the Cardinals stand by.
Since the emotional plea about retention, the Cardinals have managed to retain most of their top wrestlers, with the latest ones being Hunter Garvin and Tyler Knox. It remains to be seen if the effect rubs off well on Nico, Provo, and Norman back, both of whom have already entered the portal.
Next in line is Iowa State, which has managed to bag the Oklahoma transfer, Brayden Thompson, with two years of eligibility remaining.
Zeke Seltzer, a Missouri veteran, has now committed to Central Michigan with a final season of eligibility remaining.
Adonis Bonar II has bagged a place at the University at Buffalo after wrestling at 184 at CBU last season.
Central Michigan star Gavin Craner has now moved over to Michigan State University.
Stanford Wrestling Head Coach Chris Ayres Highlights Resource Disparities to Retain Wrestlers
Earlier this month, when Chris Ayres released a detailed statement. Calling the portal system a poaching ground, he mentioned how Stanford has been the most under-resourced program among the elite top 10.
Ayres highlighted how the program runs on a fraction of a budget compared to its rivals and is also currently facing a significant gap in its scholarship funding. He revealed how Stanford is still forced to play catch-up as other programs are already climbing above the old 9.9 scholarship cap, which followed through a legal settlement.
The recent back-to-back retentions have, however, shed light on their impeccable cultural development and Ayres’ people-first philosophy. It remains to be seen if other Cardinals who are currently in the portal will return home.
