Pittsburgh swimming coach echoes Stanford wrestling coach’s frustration over transfer portal poaching

The transfer portal conversation is no longer confined to one locker room, as Pittsburgh’s swimming coach, Chase Krietler, echoed Stanford’s wrestling coach’s take on the ethical aspect of the transfer portal game. This comes amid numerous coaches from different sports pointing out the disbanding of tightly knit teams brought in through the transfer portal system.

The transfer portal season is running wild with shocking transfers and promising new lineups. Swimming, wrestling, and other sports have already seen major changes with elite players of one team getting into another program of their choice, leaving little room for shared, maintained unity.

Kreitler has built a program cherished and lauded all over Pittsburgh, one that has brought in several championship victories, but the one element admired the most has been the culture-building effort. Kreitler recently gave a statement, highlighting how random word-of-mouth recruiting between athletes is a growing concern, also mentioning how this puts a dent in the trust built over the years.

“I will say one of the feedback pieces that we got from a couple of our athletes at the NCAA Championships is that other athletes on other teams were more or less recruiting them, saying that they should come swim at their school.”

“There’s obviously a little bit of a difference between somebody that you’ve known from your club, your entire life, and maybe you’re thinking about making a change for a variety of reasons, but when you have people that you don’t know, that are telling you to come to their school, I think that’s something that just across our sport we need to do a good job, as coaches,” he said.

This echoes the sentiments of Stanford’s wrestling coach, Chris Ayers, who recently released a plea statement, requesting help to retain his top athletes from getting hunted by the portal. Kreitler later highlighted how the system hinders personal development, and the change has to come from the congressional level to ensure fair regulation.

Stanford’s Chris Ayres’ Candid Take on the Transfer Portal

Stanford has recently bagged an overall 6th position in the NCAA D1 March Madness wrestling, and Coach Chris Ayres quickly showed his love for his athletes out in public. The veteran coach wrote a message where he highlighted how the portal system is breaking the team culture built through several years of work and mobilizing the athletes with no ease.

Through his post, Ayres spoke about how it’s important to retain athletes who make up the brand of a specific program. Not blaming them for entering the portal, Ayres mentioned how sponsorships, money, and NIL endeavors could attract even the very best, and he remained optimistic throughout his statement about winning multiple titles if the group remains intact.
