Shock Waves Hit Fans as 3‑Time All‑American Meyer Shapiro Enters Transfer Portal

With a year of eligibility remaining, the three-time All-American Meyer Shapiro is entering the transfer portal. Shapiro has wrestled for the Cornell team for three years in the 157lbs category, holding a 62-10 record.

He received the All-American honors thrice, after finishing in third place in 2024, fifth in 2025, and eighth in the last season. He joined the Big Red team in the 2023-24 season, where he earned his first All-American honor after beating Stanford’s Daniel Cardenas in the third-place match at the NCAA Championships. After earning his second consecutive All-American honor in his sophomore year, he also became the Ivy League Champion in the 157lbs category.

Shapiro was the only wrestler from the program to finish in the top eight at the NCAA Championships, which was issued after a medical forfeit in the seventh-place bout. At the 2026 NCAA Championships, Shapiro had to conclude his run following a defeat against West Virginia’s Ty Watters in the quarterfinal.

As he announced his decision to enter the transfer portal for a year, it sent shock waves among the fans, one of whom wrote:

    “No f***ing way.”

Another fan expressed their disbelief, writing:

“Did not see Meyer Shapiro on my Portal Bingo Card. Send em’ to the Big Ten.”
“Silver spoon on the move. Shocker,” a fan added.
“Oh f*ck,” one of them chimed in.

Stanford Wrestling Coach Chris Ayres Expresses His Views On Program’s Wrestlers Entering Transfer Portal

Stanford Wrestling Coach Chris Ayres shared his opinion about the program’s wrestlers entering the transfer portal. He said that while the athletes love the program, they are stuck between entering, staying with the team, or transferring for better financial prospects. He also emphasized the program’s approach to developing culture.

“I don’t like the idea of a transfer coming in and trying to take the spot of someone who has been developing in our environment,” wrote Ayres. “So I am doing everything I can to keep these guys. They are Stanford wrestlers. They are the ones who built this. I’m staying out of the portal as long as I can. These are my guys, and I don’t want to do it with anyone but them. We believe in them.”

“We are trying to run this program differently. Of the top 10 teams, we are the only team without a transfer on our roster, and I’m guessing this could include most of the top 20. Culture matters, so I don’t like the idea of a transfer coming in and trying to take the spot of someone who has been developing in our environment,” he added.

Multiple Stanford wrestlers, including Nico Provo, Tyler Knox, and Hunter Garvin, have entered the transfer pool.
