As the wrestling transfer portal continues in full swing, the Oklahoma Sooners have landed Legend Ellis from Coweta, Oklahoma, in a bid to rebuild their roster. The Sooners have had a reasonable run this past season, and new additions from the portal are expected to give them a massive boost for the current and upcoming seasons. Meanwhile, the transfer portal still contains massive talents who are yet to decide their next destination.
The NCAA transfer portal has made a drastic change for wrestlers and elite universities. Consequently, coaches must work beyond the offseason calendar. Universities are scouting, negotiating, and re-recruiting to either rebuild their existing roster or preserve their existing one.
The latest addition is Ellis, from Oklahoma, who is ranked number 13 in the country as a two-time state champion and an NHSCA honoree. He ended up getting the second position at the U17 tournament and the fourth in the under-20 event. Ellis took to his social media and celebrated the latest addition, writing:
“I want to thank God for blessing me with this opportunity and guiding me throughout this journey. Thank you to my family, coaches, teammates, and everyone who has supported me along the way. I am blessed and excited to announce my commitment to continue my academic and wrestling career at the University of Oklahoma!”
With all the accolades, Ellis is expected to amplify the Sooners’ roster and has already started receiving great support from his fans, who commented with words of great encouragement.
Wrestlers Still Left in the Transfer Portal
Despite the portal nearing its end, some of the best talents remain untouched:
Meyer Shapiro – 157 lbs (Cornell)
AJ Ferrari – 197/285 lbs (Nebraska)
Paddy Gallagher – 165 lbs (Ohio State)
Jordan Williams – 149 lbs (Iowa)
Moses Owens – 174 lbs (SDSU)
Payton Thomas – 197 lbs (Navy)
Nick Fine – 174 lbs (Columbia)
Richard Fedalen – 149 lbs (Columbia)
Jimmy Harrington – 157 lbs (Harvard)
With an unprecedented talent still in the loose, universities with a skeptical roster still see a chance to strengthen their lineup using the available talents from the pool. The current portal season has already helped change the landscape to a great extent, and it remains to be seen which programs the current uncommitted wrestlers choose.
