Mikaela Shiffrin Calls Out Her Own “Dumbass” Mistake While Praising “Badass” Rival Emma Aicher After Sweden World Cup

Mikaela Shiffrin showed both humility and sportsmanship after the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup giant slalom race in Are, Sweden. After making a costly mistake during the race, she openly criticized her own performance while also praising her rival, Emma Aicher, for her strong skiing.

Shiffrin started the race strongly and looked capable of setting one of the fastest times in the opening run. At one point she was more than half a second ahead of the leader at the final split; however, near the end of the run she made a small but costly mistake. The American encountered an unexpected bump and had to brake to make the next gate, losing valuable time. The error dropped her down in the standings; however, she got the chance to bounce back in the second run.

Despite the mistake, she competed and managed to finish fifth overall. The race was won by Julia Scheib, and Paula Moltzan finished in the second position. Trailing behind them were Alica Robinson and Eicher, in the third and fourth positions, respectively.

Following the race, Shiffrin reflected on her mistake and praised her rival, Aicher, who has been emerging as a top contender, challenging the American’s dominance in the overall standings. Shiffrin posted a bunch of pictures from the race and penned a note in the caption that read:

“A little bit of “dumba$$” and a little bit of “efff yeahhh.” Mistakes happen…today it happened for me in the first run because I was pushing so hard, which is equally annoying and also exciting!! I was so grateful that it was still enough to give it a go in the second run and climb the ranks!” wrote Mikaela Shiffrin.

    She added:

“So happy for @julia.scheib—first GS globe with STELLAR skiing🥹And so happy for @alicerobins0n and @paulamoltzan with their skiing today. @emmaaicher: PB in GS and pushing the overall title race!! Only skier who has achieved top 4 in every discipline in quite a while—you are a BADASS💪”

Mikaela Shiffrin made her feelings known about her performance at the Sweden World Cup

After finishing in fifth place at the Sweden World Cup on March 14, Mikaela Shiffrin spoke to the media, opening up about her performance and weighing in on the mistake that cost her a podium finish. Despite finishing fifth, the American said that she felt really positive things during her race; however, she wasn’t expecting the bump that came her way.

Revealing what her goal was for this race, she said:

“I felt a really good mentality, both runs. In GS racing, it’s so important to be willing to take the speed. I felt really positive things. I was just not really expecting to get like a kind of a little bit of a jump on this last roller. My goal this run was to be really attacking, then I had more speed than I expected. For the rest of the run, that was the best run in GS skiing I had in a race this year. I’m so happy with that,” said Mikaela Shiffrin.

Mikaela Shiffrin also received appreciation from Paula Moltzan for her performance. The 31-year-old currently holds the women’s record for most career GS wins with 22 titles; however, she hasn’t won a race in this discipline since December 2023.
