James Green recently responded to being called ‘unc’ by users online after his impressive performance at the US Open Wrestling Championships 2026. The tournament started on April 22 and will finish on April 26 at The Expo at World Market Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Green competed in the 74kg bout of the freestyle division on April 24, where he produced consecutive impressive performances to advance to the finals. He opened the competition by defeating Joseph Stanley in round 3 by a narrow 3-2 decision. This win was followed by his quarterfinal victory against Will Leeway, where he secured a dominant 11-0 technical fall win in just 2:31.
He then met Cameron Amine in the semifinals and earned a tactical 2-1 decision win over the Michigan wrestler, progressing to the finals. Following this dominant performance, Green, 33, was called ‘uncle’ by a user online. Taking to X, the latter wrote:
“UNC STILL GOT IT🔥 James Green is on to the final!!!”
Reacting to this tweet, Green replied:
“Everyone calling me “ UNC” and I’m not even the oldest guy wrestling😭😭😭.”
Currently, the oldest guy in wrestling is Kyle Dake, who turned 35 on February 25, 2026. He went to the 2024 Paris Olympics as the oldest wrestler on Team USA.
James Green shared an honest opinion on weighing in three times at a tournament
Before his appearance at the US Ope Wrestling Championships 2026, James Green appeared on the Athletor Podcast, where he spoke with Mike Mal. They discussed the ins and outs of the college and youth wrestling. Amid this, Green weighed in on wrestlers weighing three times a tournament, highlighting the phases that wrestlers go through.
Making his feelings known about bringing a change in this area, he said:
“I don’t know if you want these guys weighing in 4 times. I mean, look at I think the proof is there too, because look how many guys either coming into a tournament, banged up or got banged up in a tournament. You’re travelling, you’re making weight, your sleep is messed up, so very much more likely to get those injuries because your body’s going through that stuff. So definitely got to think about the athletes there. So I let the powers that be, think about that. I can complain and maybe sit with it and think about it, but off the top of my head, that’s definitely one thing I would change.”
James Green recently competed at the Zagreb Open in February, where he finished in fifth place after losing in various rounds, including the qualification round, repechage, and the bronze medal match.
