Olympic champion Suni Lee did not hold back when the word “gym hygienics” entered her recent conversation. Lee hilariously highlighted the reality of the disgust that gym foam pits usually endure, while candidly sharing her discomfort with using them and why she prefers having a collection of her own.
Foam pits have long been a staple for gymnastics training, which lets athletes train difficult routines with reduced risks. The vault, uneven bars, and the floor are a few common apparatuses where foam pit training plays a huge role, especially when a gymnast is on the road to recovery from injury.
However, Suni Lee highlighted how the safety nets of gym foam pits come at a repulsive cost. During a ‘Rider Die’ segment with Complex, Lee spoke about why she prefers having a private training setup and went full candid on exposing the stomach-churning reality of shared pits.
“The reason I love having my own foam pit is because the one in the gym is so gross, little kids would like p— in it, throw up and there’s like band-aids, dead skin cells, like kinda gross,” she said (4:27).
She also highlighted how her personal pit bowl is beyond just a training tool and more like a vibe-out spot.
“Sometimes when I get tired I like to come and sit in my foam pit, maybe take a nap, chill, throw the blocks around, throw them at people,” she added.
Fans echoed her sentiments on the reality of shared equipment, with many relating this to their gym stories. Suni Lee’s unfiltered revelation on gym aesthetics put the internet in stitches, as many are now seeing her as the most relatable collegiate athlete.
When Suni Lee Talked about the Real Meaning Behind Being Fearless
Suni Lee has stormed the world of gymnastics with her unparalleled performances across all four routines throughout her career. Her comeback story has been the most lauded narrative in college sports that stemmed from a career-threatening kidney disease.
During the 2025 Apex for Youth Gala event, Suni Lee took the stage and spoke enormously about what it meant to be truly fearless and how her courage got tested during every step of her road to success.
“To me, being fearless isn’t about having no fear; it’s about facing challenges head-on, knowing that outcomes can go either way. In gymnastics, we literally learn how to fly, we have to trust ourselves, our training, and those who lift us up,” she said (5:14).
She also highlighted how, despite negative comments, she stuck to her mantra of being good enough to conquer her own doubts.
