The three-time All-American Husker, Robert Kokesh, has made a startling return to Nebraska Huskers wrestling as the assistant coach after Coach James Green departed to chase a spot on the world team. Kokesh’s entry marks an urgent necessity to fill a void left behind by a champion Big Ten wrestler.
One of the many great talents that stood out in Lincoln was the freestyle specialist James Green, who became the first four-time All-American with the Huskers and established himself as one of the best assistant coaches of his time. Green has, however, stepped down from the role, citing his desire to focus more on his personal athletic career, which is currently focused on earning a spot on the 8th World Team in June.
Known for their decisive quickness, the Huskers have already sent the call out for the assistant coach position to a familiar Cornhusker, Robert Kokesh, who once helped establish Nebraska wrestling to great heights. Koesh became the First Big Ten champion in Nebraska history and has had a total of 144 career wins.
Nebraska has stood as the powerhouse hub of wrestling in the Midwest for decades, known for delivering its signature “Husker Power.” The Bob Devaney floor has produced some of the greatest mat slammers of modern times, backed by unparalleled leadership from a string of coaches who have turned Lincoln into an all-American elite hub.
James Green Writes About His Glorious Days As a Husker
James Green has been a four-time All-American for Nebraska and was qualified to headline seven World Teams at 70kg and took home world silver in 2017 and bronze in 2015. As he wrote his departing statement from Huskers, Green reflected on his time at Lincoln and named Nebraska as his second home.
“While I initially returned to Nebraska to train and compete throughout this quad leading up to the LA Olympics, I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to join the coaching staff. It’s been a great experience coaching at my alma mater and being part of two historic seasons for the program. I could go on and on about my love for Nebraska, the coaches, and my teammates. Nebraska will always be my second home,” wrote Green.
James Green will stay in Lincoln to train through the summer, but is sure to leave behind a mark that will now be a fuel for the upcoming talents and a duty of an incoming legend to expand upon.
