The USA Volleyball Women’s National Team has voiced concerns regarding the International Olympic Committee’s proposed mandatory genetic testing policy. The team issued a lengthy statement online, expressing significant concerns about the testing.
The athletes of the USA women’s volleyball team underwent mandatory genetic or SRY testing administered by the FIVB ahead of the 2028 LA Olympics. This testing was conducted in compliance with an updated IOC policy mandating genetic screening for all female athletes competing in the women’s categories of Olympic events.
The women’s volleyball team complied with the requirements, but they recently released a public statement expressing significant concerns. They emphasized the invasive biological testing, the lack of transparency around how sensitive genetic data is handled, and more.
Highlighting these issues, the team shared an official lengthy statement on Instagram, which read:
“The lOC has mandated genetic testing for all female athletes who may participate in Olympic events. The athletes of the USA Women’s National Team have complied with the SRY testing requirements as administered by the FIVB. However, we feel compelled to formally express our significant concerns regarding both the process and implementation of this policy. As female athletes, we were asked to undergo invasive biological testing without sufficient transparency surrounding the handling of deeply sensitive genetic information. At the time of testing, athletes had not been clearly informed where this data will be stored, who will have access to it, how it will be protected, how long it will be retained, or what limitations exist regarding its future use.”
They added:
“We are equally troubled by the lack of a clearly defined independent appeals process in the event of disputed or false-positive findings. Any policy carrying consequences this serious must include transparent due process protections, confirmatory procedures, and athlete advocacy safeguards. This statement is not about resisting accountability or refusing compliance. It is about asserting that athletes deserve the same standards of medical privacy, procedural fairness, transparency, and dignity expected in any professional environment involving sensitive health and genetic information.”
