Ilia Malinin, who had a roller-coaster experience at the 2026 Winter Olympics, recently revealed the name of the track and field athlete he wishes to trade places with for a day as an Olympian.
Malinin made his Olympic debut at the Milano-Cortina Games and opened his campaign at the team event, where he won a gold medal. Along with this, he suffered an unexpected loss in the free skate finals. He wrapped up his campaign after performing at the exhibition gala on February 21.
Days after concluding his Olympic run, he sat for a conversation with Self magazine, where he answered several questions. When asked which Olympian he would trade places with for a day, Malinin said:
“Maybe Noah Lyles. I would love to see what he does, and I feel like it would be a good time.”
In the 2026 Winter Olympics’ team event, Malinin delivered a strong performance, landing perfect quadruple axels and executing a nearly flawless event. He secured a winning score of 200.03 points, playing a decisive role in Team USA’s gold medal.
This performance was followed by his appearance at the free skate final, where he entered as the favorite. However, things went south after he faced two falls in the final, and his planned quadruple axel turned into a single axel. With this performance, he finished in the 15th position, earning a score of 156.33. Overall, he landed in the 15th position with a score of 264.49.
Ilia Malinin Opens Up About the Inspiration Behind His Exhibition Gala Performance at the 2026 Winter Olympics
In the aforementioned interview, Ilia Malinin weighed in on the inspiration behind his performance at the exhibition gala. The American skated to ‘Fear’ by the American rapper NF, representing his heartbreak in the free skate final in Milan. He highlighted the mental health concerns that several athletes go through in their respective sports.
Highlighting the hardships that are faced by the athletes on the Olympic stage, he said:
“The gala is a very special piece, and it’s really a big message I want to promote about mental health. It’s that all of us athletes go through this. It’s really just something we need support on, and it’s a lot to handle when we have so many eyes, so many cameras in our face, or noise around us. It’s something that not everyone realises we have to deal with, not only our performances. This is going to be that message.”
He further opened up about the reason behind choosing the music, saying:
“The way I decided about my music was very fun concept just really trying to find something that was going to really be emotional and speak to the people here.”
After his Olympic debut in Milan, Ilia Malinin is expected to compete at the World Figure Skating Championships in Prague.
