After facing an unexpected experience at the 2026 Winter Olympics, Ilia Malinin recently opened up about redeeming himself at the World Championships. He said that he is focused on moving on from the Olympic stress.
Malinin’s Olympic campaign came to an end on February 14, after his men’s free skate event didn’t pan out as expected. He entered the event as a heavy favorite; however, shortly after the beginning of his routine, things quickly went south, as he fell twice and couldn’t complete two jumps, which ideally were to be quads. Following this mishap, he faced a meltdown on the biggest stage in the world.
He ended in the 15th position in the segment, scoring an overall score of 264.49. Days after this defeat, the American spoke to the media after the Olympics exhibition gala, where he opened up about plans after the Winter Olympics.
Talking about targeting redemption at the World Championships, he said:
“My next goal is to have a redemption skate at the World Championships, and after that just enjoy the, you know, the stress of the Olympic season, and it will be finally over,” said Ilia Malinin.
After the disappointing performance in the free skate finals, Malinin returned to the ice at the exhibition gala, where she depicted the dangers of social media by skating to Fear by American rapper NF.
Ilia Malinin Made His Feelings Known About The Olympic Pressure
After his free skate program on February 14, Ilia Malinin spoke to NBC Olympics, where he emphasized how the Olympic pressure played a major role in his disappointing performance. Revealing that it was a lot to handle for him, he said that not everyone will understand that.
“It’s a lot to handle. And, you know, the pressure of the Olympics is it’s really something different. And I think that not a lot of people will understand that,” said Ilia Malinin.
He further addressed how the performance mentally affected him, saying:
“Mentally, it was. It was a weird feeling just going into the program. I just had so many thoughts and memories flood right before I got into my starting pose. And I almost, I think, maybe overwhelmed me a little bit. You know, I’ve been through a lot in my life for a lot of, you know, bad and good experiences. So just, you know, I feel like just the pressure of especially being that, you know, Olympic gold medal hopeful was just it’s just something I can’t control now.”
