“Horrible For All Athletes” – Fans Slam OSU For Hosting Regionals in Dangerous Heat Conditions

Gymnastics fans alongside Jordan Chiles took a swipe at (OSU) Oregon State University for hosting the Corvallis regionals with inadequate conditions. The Corvallis regionals were held at the Gill Coliseum on Sunday by Oregon State.

No. 4 UCLA, No. 5 Alabama gymnastics, No. 12 Utah, and No. 13 Minnesota competed in the final round of the Corvallis Regional. The OSU squad finished third in the first session of the Corvallis regional semifinal round, following Utah and Alabama, and losing a spot in the final round. The top four teams at the Corvallis Regional semifinal competed at the Gill Coliseum, which has a seating capacity of 9301.

However, the conditions on Sunday were far from satisfactory, as no attention was paid to mitigate the heat. Olympic medalist Chiles, who competed for UCLA, took a jab at OSU for harsh conditions, suggesting the program should never be allowed to host competitions. She also highlighted a few serious situations and wrote:

“I’m sorry but OSU should legit not be allowed to host regionals again until they can figure out the heat situation in Gill. There are athletes with ice on the top of their head and back of their necks and coaches with short sleeves rolled into tank tops because of the temperature.”
“Mind you this is all during warmups when the girls are in short sleeve leos,” Chiles added. “Ciena said something in Clay’s vlog about cramping on Friday because of it.”
Fans aligned their views with Chiles, with one of them writing:
“This is horrible for all athletes.”
Another fan highlighted the effects of poor conditions on the athletes.
“Yikes that surely is gonna effect the athletes and like a health risk,” another fan wrote.
One of the fans even called the situation disrespectful for the athletes.
“That’s beyond disrespectful and could lead to disaster. They should be ashamed,” a fan added
“The crazy part is, it was only 74° today… working there in the summer (85+ most days) is hell,” one of the fans chimed in.
