“Price Gouging,” “Standard American Scamming” – Fans Outraged as LA 2028 Blames Ticket Price Surge on Service Fee

The 2028 LA Olympics have already engulfed themselves in controversy, way before the opening ceremony, as fans have slammed the reported 24% service fee levied on the ticket price. The backlash began as the Olympic committee reported that the service fee is the primary cause behind the surge.

LA will become the third city in history, after London and Paris, to host the Summer Olympics three times. The presales have begun at $28, alongside premium packages that come with a surge cost of their own.

As the sale has broken all the previous Olympic ticket records, local buyers and fans globally have slammed the system, calling it “Standard American Scamming.” Many have highlighted how the service fee is bound to create a divide and in no shape or form serves the interests of sports enthusiasts.

    One user wrote:

“24% SERVICE FEE. That would make the mob blush.”

    Another user commented:

“Didn’t Congress have a hearing on the price gouging recently? This is absurd.”

    Someone wrote:

“The ‘standard industry practices’ is just code for standard American scamming of sports fans.”
    Another fan wrote:
“What a bunch of nonsense. Call it for what it is. Price gouging and screwing over the fans.”
“Welcome to 🇺🇸. Everything comes with a massive service fee or surcharge, from sporting events, to concerts, the county fair – basically anything that you buy a ticket for.”
The Olympic committee has backed the service fee inclusion by highlighting that it’s part of the basic ticketing infrastructure, calling it a core part of their standard industry practice.

LA 2028 Olympics: Combating the Rise of Duplicate Ticket Prices

Senior Vice President of Games Revenue with the LA28 Olympics committee, Allison Katz-Mayfield, recently said the board is determined to curb any price surging done via third-party resellers.

She spoke about how they have systems in place to eliminate bad actors from getting an influence and also have their own verified resale platforms to create a better experience.

“We have a system of registration in place that will remove all the bots and bad actors, and we’ve also created our own resale platform so when the fans are ready to buy tickets, they’re buying them from a verified resource platform,” she said (2:36).

She also said that they have a strict layering system in place to protect the fans from ticketing fraud and has cautioned the fans to beware of their own purchases.
