Ex-SJSU volleyball star Brooke Slusser recently opened up about sharing her living space with transgender player Blaire Fleming without her knowledge. Slusser competed alongside Fleming in the 2023 season.
However, she only came to know about Fleming being transgender in 2024, and that too through a media report. Recently, Slusser reflected on the difficult time she navigated since then, while SJSU sued the Trump administration after the government stated that the school violated Title IX. Slusser stated that she shared the room and sometimes the bed with the transgender player.
She also highlighted a few more moments that she shared with Fleming, which made her uncomfortable later,
“You find out you’re just chilling in a bed with a man that you have no idea about,” she said. “It’s hard to process. I don’t even know if I can say I’ve fully processed it to this day. It’s just, you’re told something for so long, you think something for so long and you act very normally about a situation, and then come to find out it’s all a lie.”
“Watching movies snuggled up in bed, like, all the normal things you’d think girls do in an apartment, like, my bathroom is across the hall from my bedroom and I’m going back and forth and everyone’s out doing their thing, and I probably would have covered up more.”
Slusser further added that had she known the truth, she would have acted differently. She also added that she hasn’t fully recovered from the situation yet.
“I would have changed everything about what I was doing in that apartment if I would have known that it was a man. So it’s just hard to fully say I can grasp all of that when it was almost two years of me living with this situation.”
Slusser held the head coach, Todd Kress, responsible for urging her to share a room with Fleming.
What Did Ex-SJSU Volleyball Player Brooke Slusser Say About Head Coach Todd Kress?
Ex-SJSU volleyball player Brooke Slusser held the team’s head coach, Todd Kress, responsible for putting her through a difficult situation, stating he was aware of Blaire Fleming being transgender. In the same interview, Slusser remembered that after her recruitment, she was allotted a four-bedroom apartment in San Jose, California.
Slusser added that while two apartments filled with SJSU volleyball players were looking for a tenant, head coach Kress deliberately sent her into “the villa,” believing she would get along better with the players there.
“Todd Kress, knowing this person was a man, and saying that I’m going to ‘fit in better’ with these girls on my volleyball team, couldn’t have been further from the truth,” she said.
“We were all in the same class, so if all of us are there next year it’s not like we’d have to find another roommate, so he thought it would be nice that I was with all of the girls that are in my class so we could spend a full two years together.”
The former SJSU Volleyball player Brooke Slusser also accused Fleming of plotting harm against her.
