Cael Sanderson Explains Why This Penn State Team Is Different After Dominant 184.5-Point Big Ten Win

Cael Sanderson weighed in on why this Penn State team is different after its dominant win at the Big Ten Wrestling championships. With this victory, the team has won their fourth straight team title at the tournament.

The Big Ten Wrestling Championships, which took place from March 7 to 8 at the Bryce Jordan Center, witnessed a sea of commanding performances, and most of them were from Penn State wrestlers. After locking horns with strong contenders in multiple weight classes, the Nittany Lions have once again won the Big Ten title with 184 points.

This is the most points the program has earned in the tournament, and trailing behind them was Ohio State, who was outpaced by 35.5 points. Another record for Penn State during this championship was seven conference champions. After this remarkable performance and victory, the team’s head coach, Sanderson, explained why this team is different, highlighting their determination and hard work.

“I don’t know how to really compare teams, but this is a really good team. The character, determination, everything is outstanding. We’re happy and definitely grateful to have a good weekend like this,” said Cael Sanderson.

The wrestlers, including Luke Lilledahl (125 pounds), Shayne Van Ness (149 pounds), PJ Duke (157 pounds), Mitchell Mesenbrink (165 pounds), Levi Haines (174 pounds), Rocco Welsh (184 pounds), and Josh Barr (197 pounds), stood atop the podium in their respective weights, playing a major role in the team’s win.

Cael Sanderson opened up about his overall team performance after victory at the Big Ten Wrestling Championships

After the commanding victory, Cael Sanderson and some of the Penn State wrestlers sat for a post-meet press conference, where he made his feelings known about his team’s overall performance. Calling it a tough conference, he said that his wrestlers performed well and said that the best part is that all of them are going healthy to the nationals. Exuding excitement about the national championships, he said:

“I think overall, obviously, it’s a very tough conference tournament with a lot of great wrestlers, and right before the nationals, sometimes it can be a little more of a challenge to get fired up. But you want to get in here and wrestle well, and, uh, we’re going through healthy, which is good. That doesn’t always happen. So, yeah, we’re excited to move into the nationals and happy for this weekend. Penn State did a great job, and the Big 10 also did a great job,” Cael Sanderson said.
He further weighed in on PJ Duke’s final clash against Nebraska’s Antrell Taylor at 157 pounds. Praising him for his skills and analyzing the bout, the head coach added:
“But yeah, PJ wrestled great. He just looked good and determined to go score his points, and yeah, he did a nice job. I mean, he made some, you know, small adjustments and just went out there and took care of what he needed to take care of as well.”

Cael Sanderson has been serving as the head coach of the Penn State wrestling team for the past 17 years, as he joined the team in April 2009. Before this, he was associated with Iowa State as the head coach.
