Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson recently explained how his team manages to peak at the right time, especially during the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments. Currently, the team is gearing up for the National Wrestling Championships, scheduled from March 19 to 21 in Cleveland’s Rocket Arena.
The Penn State team has built a reputation for delivering its best performances during the most important tournaments. They recently defended their Big Ten Wrestling Championships title, securing their fourth-consecutive victory with an impressive 184.5 points and seven individual champions. They are also entering as the favorites and the defending champions at the National Wrestling Championships.
Sanderson was recently asked how his team keeps peaking at the right time, when most teams get tired at the end of the season. He highlighted how their training works out during the important times and said that the team has learned over time.
“I mean, it gives us a lot of confidence. We obviously track everything, and we know what we did every practice for the last 15 years, and we reflect back, and we learn, and a lot of times you learn by accident and by mistakes, and the whole training the way college wrestling wrestlers train has kind of changed over the last 15 years, and just so I think for peaking is just about enthusiasm; it’s trying being excited to be where you’re at in that moment, and it takes just a year-long process and a multi-year-long process, right?” said Cael Sanderson (4:30 onwards).
“And you want your kids to enjoy the sport and enjoy competing more when they leave here than when they get here. You know, that’s something we obviously talk about, and we pride ourselves in that when our kids leave our program, they’re going to love the sport and the ups and downs, the challenges, the opportunities. More when they leave than when they get here. So that’s important to us. I think that’s a big part of peaking is just the enthusiasm factor in the right moments.”
Cael Sanderson Weighs In on Why This Penn State Team Is Different After the Big Ten Championships Win
“I don’t know how to really compare teams, but this is a really good team. The character, determination, everything is outstanding. We’re happy and definitely grateful to have a good weekend like this,” said Cael Sanderson.
