Alysa Liu Shares Her IVF Journey and Growing Up in a Unique Non-Traditional Family

Alysa Liu recently opened up about her IVF journey, revealing how she and her siblings dealt with everything while growing up in a unique, non-traditional family. The American recently wrapped up her Olympic campaign, delivering a historic figure skating performance in Milan.

Liu made a notable appearance at the 2026 Winter Olympics, clinching two gold medals. Her first gold medal came after her second-place finish in the team event, where she played a crucial role in Team USA’s gold medal win with 74.90 points. This gold medal was followed by another one in the free skate.

After earning a score of 226.79 points, she stood atop the podium, becoming the first American in 24 years to win an Olympic gold medal in the women’s figure skating event. Following her victory, she has been sitting for interviews, and her most recent one was with Rolling Stone. While discussing her Olympic campaign, she also opened up about finding out that she and all four of her siblings were born from IVF donor eggs.

    She said:

“Yeah, I mean, we didn’t know about it for a long time. I actually figured it out, cause I don’t know, I was like, ‘Because our mom is full Chinese too.’ I was kinda like, ‘Oh, I totally don’t look full Chinese, like there’s some,’ and then I was like, ‘And my mom’s really old, like there’s no way she gave birth, gave birth to me.’ But like, I kind of put two and two together. Yeah, I mean, it hasn’t affected our family at all. We’re just kinda like, sure, it is what it is.”

The 20-year-old was raised by her father, Arthur Liu, who fled to the US from China at the young age of 25.

Alysa Liu Opened Up About Starting Figure Skating as a Kid and Her Early Retirement

Shortly after concluding her time at the Milano-Cortina Games, Alysa Liu sat for a conversation with “Live Kelly and Mark,” where she discussed several aspects of her figure skating journey. From starting the sport at the young age of 5 to retiring early at 16 and then returning after a two-year hiatus, she shared it all.

Opening up about whether she loved the sport right away and her favorite part about figure skating, she said:

“5 years old. Yeah. I did like it right away. I don’t know if I was good immediately, but I could balance. I could stand up. I actually love to fall and slide and stuff like that, and you get like deductions and competition for that, but that’s what I enjoyed at first.”

She was then asked about her retirement after the 2022 Beijing Olympics and how her father reacted to her decision. Replying to this, Liu said:

“I don’t know. I didn’t give anyone time to react. I didn’t tell anyone beforehand. I was like, I’m quitting. No one could tell me otherwise. Uh, I took off about two years. Um, I didn’t start training again till like mid June 2024.”

After a successful Olympic run, Alysa Liu was expected to return to ice at the World Figure Skating Championships; however, her withdrawal was recently confirmed when the roster for the tournament was released, as she was replaced by Sarah Everhardt.
