After Alysa Liu’s impressive gold medal at the Winter Olympics, her father, Arthur Liu, has stepped back from managing her career. He made his feelings known about this change, expressing that even though it hurts, he fully trusts his daughter.
On Thursday, February 19, Liu made history at Milano-Cortina by becoming the first American in 24 years to win an Olympic gold medal in the figure skating competition. She stood atop the podium after securing an overall score of 226.79 points after a clutch performance in the free skate finals.
A day after her Olympic triumph, her father sat for a conversation with USA Today, where he revealed that he has stepped down from his daughter’s manager role. He admitted that even though it hurts him to step back, he always wanted to do it and wanted her to be independent.
“So I had always wanted somebody to take over, and that happened. So, OK, you’re not on the team anymore. In a way, it hurts a little bit to hear. But as a matter of fact, that’s exactly where I wanted, for her to be independent,” said Alysa Liu’s father.
He added:
“She has a good team of people around her. So I don’t have to worry about how I can protect her or what to do. I’m totally hands-off with her business. I have done my job for her and now I need to focus on the other four (children).’’

Before competing in the individual events, Alysa Liu also participated in the team event on February 6. During the event played a pivotal role in helping her team win a gold medal. She recorded 74.90 points after producing a commanding short program performance.
After she was awarded with a gold medal on the podium, things took an unexpected turn. In a conversation with the media, she revealed that her original gold medal fell down and got too damaged, and she received a new gold medal. Explaining the details of what happened, she said:
“I was just jumping up and down, as one does to celebrate, and it just dropped. It just literally fell off of the ribbon. It got really scratched up. Very dented and not very dented, but pretty dented. And I actually liked it when it was off the ribbon, but that’s not allowed. That would be a problem for today if I couldn’t wear it,” said Alysa Liu.
When asked if she got to keep the old gold medal, she said:
“No, I have to give it in. I know. I was like, can’t you just fix this one?. I’m attached, but it’s OK. I’m detached. Just like it was.”
