Alysa Liu delivered a strong performance in the figure skating final at the 2026 Winter Olympics, claiming a gold medal. She garnered applause from all over the world, including the American singer Selena Gomez.
On Thursday, Liu became the first American in 24 years to become an Olympic champion in women’s figure skating. She donned a shimmering golden dress and performed on Donna Summer’s ‘MacArthur Park Suite,’ securing 226.79 points overall. With this, she clinched gold, besting Japanese rival Kaori Sakamoto, who stood on the second step of the podium, registering 224.90 points.
With this feat, Liu won the hearts of all her fans worldwide, along with the singer and the owner of the beauty brand ‘Rare,’ Gomez. The latter posted a collage of the skater at the Olympics, and in the pictures, she was seen holding a lipstick from the singer’s brand.
Congratulating the skater for the win and noting their connection through the lipstick, Gomez wrote on her Instagram story:
“Congratulations @alysaliu🫶 (She’s just like me fr)”

Before the individual figure skating competition in Milan-Cortina, Alysa Liu also competed in the team event on February 6. She produced a commanding performance in the short program, recording 74.90 points. She played a major role in helping her team win the gold medal.

After delivering a powerful performance that charmed the judges and the audience at the 2026 Winter Olympics, Alysa Liu weighed in on her performance in the free skate. One of the reporters asked her about how she brings so much joy to her performance.
Replying to this, she said that she just loves sharing her story through her art. Expressing her mindset about it, she said:
“I mean, I guess the thing is I love what I like to share about myself is like my story and my art, my creative process, and I guess messing up doesn’t take away from that. It’s still something. It’s still a story, you know, a bad story is still a story, and I think that’s beautiful, so there’s no way to lose,” said Alysa Liu.
She was further asked about what story she was trying to tell on the ice during the finals. Responding to this, she added:
“Well, I was trying to show off my dress. This is a new dress, and I really like it. I was also, focused on engaging with the audience, so in between my transitions, they’re kind of seated high up, so I really take a moment to look at people, smile at them, give them a little shoulder, you know, engage with the crowd. And I did just that, so really happy. I mean, I’m everything. I’m looking forward to every moment. I’m kind of present right now, so, but yeah, Olympic Gala for sure.”
After claiming first place in the team event, Alysa Liu was issued a new gold medal, as she dropped her original gold medal in the excitement of the moment.
