Jim Schwartz will not be getting a second stint at head coach in the NFL.
After being strongly considered as a candidate to become the Cleveland Browns’ next head coach, Schwartz was passed up for former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken.
Schwartz joined the Browns’ coaching staff prior to the 2023 and served as the team’s defensive coordinator for the past three season. While he is still under contract with the Browns, Schwartz made it apparent that he will not return back to Cleveland next season, saying goodbye to multiple players.
While Schwartz came up just short of landing his second head coaching gig, let’s re-visit his first and only head coaching stint.
Jim Schwartz Was the Head Coach For the Detroit Lions From 2009-2013
After being a member of the Tennessee Titans’ coaching staff from 1999-2008, Jim Schwartz landed his first head coaching gig in the NFL in 2009, becoming the Detroit Lions’ head coach.
Schwartz didn’t have much success as the Lions’ head coaching, winning just 29 games and losing 51 in five seasons. Of the five seasons, Schwartz led the Lions to just one winning season and one playoff appearance.
In his first season as Detroit’s head coach in 2009, the Lions went 2-14, and followed up in 2010 going 6-10. Schwartz’s third season was his most successful, going 10-6 and finishing second place in the NFC North, clinching a wild card playoff berth.
The Lions finished 4-12 in 2012. In 2013, Detroit had a good start to the season, going 6-3 in its first nine games. A late season collapse that saw the Lions lose six of its seven finals games led to a 7-9 finish and missing the playoffs.
On Dec. 30, 2013, Schwartz was fired as the team’s head coach.
