Why Was Dave Portnoy Banned From Super Bowl? All We Know About Barstool Owner’s Punishment

According to reporting from Front Office Sports, Barstool owner Dave Portnoy will be allowed to attend Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, in early February. Portnoy had been banned from NFL games since 2019, when he was ejected from Super Bowl LIII between the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams.

In an email made public by Front Office Sports, the league said the following about the situation:

“Mr. Portnoy can buy a ticket to the game,” an NFL spokesperson said in an email.

Portnoy is a well-known Patriots fan and was kicked out of Super Bowl LIII for disruptive behavior, which came shortly after he falsified media credentials to attend a related event in the prior week, for which he was charged with criminal trespass. Previously, in 2017, Barstool employees also falsified media badges to attend NFL events after the outlet was denied credentials.

The conflict between Dave Portnoy, his company Barstool, and the NFL goes back to 2015 when commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Tom Brady for the “Deflategate” scandal. At the time, Barstool employees organized protests outside the league’s headquarters in New York, and Portnoy distributed thousands of T-shirts depicting Goodell as a clown.

Dave Portnoy is Outraged at Bill Belichick Missing on Being a First Ballot Hall of Famer

To almost everyone’s surprise, Bill Belichick won’t be a first ballot Hall of Famer. The news was broken by several outlets on Tuesday, and according to ESPN, the coach has known since last Friday.

Dave Portnoy, a well-known Patriots fan, didn’t take well to the news, and he smelled foul play in the committee’s decision. He went on X this Wednesday and asked the following:

“By the way how did Ron Borges, Bill Polian and Tony Dungy all end up being Hall of Fame voters at the same time? That’s like the holy trinity of Belichick haters.”

The news was a surprise to everyone, especially to Belichick himself, who reportedly asked if winning six Super Bowls was not enough to ensure entry into the Hall of Fame nowadays.

He will certainly be allowed entry sooner rather than later, but the fact that he was denied on his first year is puzzling. It speaks, possibly, to how the last few years with the Patriots and the poor first season at North Carolina have hurt his public persona.
